Wood Types and Selection Guide
Choosing the right wood for a project is one of the most important decisions a woodworker makes. The species you select affects every aspect of the finished piece — its appearance, strength, weight, durability, workability, and cost. A dining table built from soft pine will dent and scratch within months; the same table built from hard maple will last generations. Understanding wood species, grades, and characteristics empowers you to make informed choices that match materials to purpose. This guide covers the major categories of wood, the most important species in each, and the factors to consider when selecting lumber.
How Wood is Classified
Wood is broadly divided into two categories: softwoods and hardwoods. Despite the names, the distinction is botanical, not based on actual hardness. Softwoods come from coniferous (cone-bearing) trees that have needles and remain green year-round. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees that have broad leaves and typically lose them in winter.
Softwoods include pine, fir, spruce, cedar, and redwood. They grow faster than hardwoods, making them generally less expensive. They are easier to cut and shape with both hand and power tools. However, they are less durable, more prone to dents and scratches, and can be difficult to finish evenly.

Softwood Grades
Softwood lumber is graded by appearance and structural properties. Select grades (Select, No. 1 Common, No. 2 Common) are suitable for visible projects like furniture and trim. Hardwood Grades

Wood Movement and Moisture Content
All wood moves. As humidity changes, wood absorbs or releases moisture, causing it to swell or shrink. This movement is greatest in the tangential direction (across the grain, parallel to the growth rings), about half as much in the radial direction (across the grain, perpendicular to the growth rings), and negligible along the grain.
Proper wood selection and preparation accounts for this movement. Use quarter-sawn stock (where the growth rings are perpendicular to the face) for applications where stability is critical, such as tabletops and drawer fronts. Allow for expansion in wide assemblies by using slotted screw holes, frame-and-panel construction, or breadboard ends.
Always check the moisture content of lumber before working with it. For interior furniture, wood should be at 6–8 percent moisture content. For outdoor projects, 10–14 percent is appropriate. Use a moisture meter to verify, especially for lumber that has not been properly kiln-dried.
