Step 4: Sanding and Finishing

Sand through grits 120 to 400 while the lathe runs at low speed. Apply finish (Danish oil, friction polish, or lacquer) while the lathe turns. Buff to a shine with a soft cloth.

Bowl Turning

Bowl turning shapes a block of wood mounted on a faceplate or chuck, with the grain running perpendicular to the lathe bed. The tool approach is different from spindle turning because the wood presents end grain and side grain alternately as it rotates.

Step 1: Mounting the Blank

Mount the bowl blank on a faceplate with screws, or on a chuck that grips a tenon cut on the blank. Ensure the blank is balanced — an unbalanced blank causes dangerous vibration. Start at low speed (500–800 RPM for a 6-inch bowl).

Step 2: Shaping the Outside

Use the bowl gouge to shape the outside of the bowl. Cut from the rim toward the base (downhill). Support the gouge on the tool rest with the bevel rubbing. The cut should produce continuous shavings, not dust.

Step 3: Hollowing

Move the tool rest inside the bowl. Use the bowl gouge to hollow the interior, working from the center outward. Take light cuts — deep cuts can cause catches that break the bowl or throw it from the lathe. Check wall thickness frequently with calipers.

Step 4: Finishing

Sand the interior and exterior through grits 120 to 400. Apply finish (food-safe mineral oil and beeswax for bowls used with food, otherwise Danish oil or shellac). Remove the bowl from the lathe and sand the bottom.

Sharpening Turning Tools

Turning tools require frequent sharpening — before each use and often during use. A slow-speed bench grinder (1725 RPM) with a fine-grit white aluminum oxide wheel is the standard sharpening system. Use a sharpening jig that holds the tool at the correct angle. Freehand sharpening is possible with practice but a jig produces more consistent results.

The basic sharpening technique for a bowl gouge: set the jig to the manufacturer’s recommended angle (typically 40–55 degrees for bowl gouges). Grind the fingernail profile (a curved shape) by rotating the tool as you move it across the wheel. Cool the tool frequently by dipping in water — overheating ruins the temper of the steel.

The skew chisel is sharpened with a double bevel — one on each side, meeting at the cutting edge. The bevel angle is typically 25–30 degrees. Grind both sides equally, maintaining symmetry. A skew chisel must be sharpened to a razor edge to function properly; a dull skew catches and digs.

Scrapers are sharpened by grinding a 45-degree bevel, then burnishing a burr on the cutting edge. The burr does the cutting — scrapers are resharpened by simply reburnishing the burr, which takes seconds. A sharp burr produces fine shavings; a dull burr produces dust.

Safety in Wood Turning

Wood turning is potentially dangerous because the workpiece is moving and tools are sharp. Follow these safety rules:

Wear a face shield — bowls and spindles can explode at high speed. Never wear gloves or loose clothing near a spinning lathe. Keep the tool rest adjusted close to the workpiece (1/8 inch gap). Remove the tool rest when sanding. Never reach over a spinning workpiece. Turn the lathe off to make adjustments.

Check stock for cracks, knots, and defects before turning. Defective wood can fly apart at high speed. Start at appropriate speeds — large or unbalanced pieces need slower speeds. Increase speed as the piece becomes balanced.
