A well-designed joint transfers loads efficiently, accommodates wood movement, and enhances the visual coherence of the object. Principles of Strong Joinery

All joinery serves the same fundamental purpose: transferring loads from one member to another. The strongest joints maximize the surface area of wood-to-wood contact for glue adhesion and mechanically interlock the pieces to resist pulling forces.

Glue is remarkably strong when properly applied. A well-fitted joint with modern PVA (polyvinyl acetate) wood glue is stronger than the wood itself. When the joint fails, the wood breaks next to the glue line, not at the glue line itself. This means that the quality of the fit matters more than the adhesive.

Mechanical reinforcement — screws, dowels, dominos, or interlocking shapes — provides strength while the glue cures and adds resistance to shear and pulling forces. The best joinery combines precise fit, adequate glue surface, and appropriate mechanical reinforcement.

Butt Joint

The butt joint is the simplest joint — two pieces of wood butted together and fastened with glue, screws, or nails. It has minimal glue surface and no mechanical interlock, making it the weakest joint for its size.

Butt joints are acceptable for non-structural applications: drawer backs, cabinet case backs, and temporary fixtures. When reinforced with pocket screws or dowels, butt joints become adequate for many cabinet and furniture applications where strength requirements are moderate.

For stronger butt joints, use glue plus mechanical fasteners. Pocket holes (drilled at an angle and plugged with screws) provide good strength for face frames and cabinet cases. Biscuits or dominos add alignment and some shear strength.

Dado Joint

A dado is a groove cut across the grain of one board that accepts the end of another board. It is one of the strongest and most useful joints in cabinetmaking. The dado provides substantial glue surface and resists racking forces well.

Dadoes are used for shelves in bookcases, dividers in drawers, and any application where one piece must join another at a right angle with strength. A through-dado extends across the full width of the board. A stopped dado stops short of the front edge, hiding the joint from view.

The mortise-and-tenon is one of the oldest and strongest joinery methods. A tenon (a projecting tongue) on one piece fits into a mortise (a matching cavity) in the other piece. The joint resists racking, twisting, and pulling forces in all directions.

Mortise-and-tenon joints are used for tables and chairs (joining legs to aprons), doors and windows (joining rails to stiles), and frames of all kinds. The strength comes from the large glue surface and the mechanical interlock of the tenon in the mortise.

The tenon should be about one-third the thickness of the stock. The mortise should be the same width as the tenon for a snug fit. Dovetail Joint

The dovetail is the most visually distinctive joint and one of the strongest. Interlocking pins and tails resist pulling forces in one direction — the joint cannot come apart unless the wood fails. Dovetails are used for drawer fronts, boxes, carcass construction, and any application where maximum strength and visual appeal are desired.

Through dovetails show the pins and tails on both faces. They are the strongest and most decorative form. Half-blind dovetails hide the pins on one face, used for drawer fronts where the front face should show only the drawer face, not the joinery.

Cutting dovetails by hand requires practice but produces the finest results. The marking gauge establishes baseline depths, a dovetail saw cuts the tails, a coping saw removes the waste, and chisels clean the corners. Machine-cut dovetails (router jig or dovetail machine) are faster but lack the character of hand-cut dovetails.

Box Joint

The box joint (finger joint) is similar to the dovetail but uses rectangular fingers instead of angled tails. It provides good strength and is easier to cut than dovetails because the fingers are parallel, not angled.

Box joints are used for boxes, drawers, and small cabinets. They are typically cut on a table saw with a dado stack and a jig that indexes the fingers. The fingers should be the same width as the stock thickness for the best appearance.

Biscuit and Domino Joinery

Biscuits (oval-shaped compressed wood wafers) and Dominos (larger, rectangular tenons) provide alignment and shear strength for edge joining, miter joints, and panel glue-ups. A slot is cut in each piece, the biscuit or domino is inserted with glue, and the pieces are clamped together.

Biscuits are most useful for aligning panels during glue-up and reinforcing edge joints. Dominos, from the Festool Domino system, are larger and provide substantial strength for furniture joinery. Both systems are faster than traditional joinery and eliminate the need for complex layout.

Joinery for Large Panels

Edge-joining boards into wide panels requires special attention to both technique and joinery. The simplest method is the glue-line rip — joint the edges of adjacent boards and glue them directly. This works well when the edges are straight and the boards are properly prepared. For additional strength and alignment, use biscuits or Dominos at 6–8 inch intervals along the joint.

The tongue-and-groove joint adds mechanical strength to edge joints. A tongue is cut on one edge and a matching groove on the adjoining edge. This joint provides alignment during glue-up and adds some resistance to panel cupping. Tongue-and-groove is standard for flooring and paneling but also useful for tabletops and cabinet panels.

For the strongest panel joint, use a spline — a thin strip of wood or plywood set into matching grooves in both boards. The spline grain runs perpendicular to the panel grain, providing maximum shear strength. Splines are particularly useful for panels that must bear weight or resist racking forces.

Choosing the Right Joint

Selecting the appropriate joint depends on several factors:

Strength requirements. Mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joints provide the highest strength. Butt joints are weakest.

Appearance. Dovetail joints are prized for their visual appeal. Stopped dadoes and half-blind dovetails hide joinery from view. Choose joints that enhance or conceal as appropriate.

Tool availability. Dadoes require a table saw with a dado stack or a router. Dovetails can be cut by hand or with a jig. Choose joints that match your tooling.

Skill level. Butt joints and pocket hole joinery are beginner-friendly. Dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joints require more practice.
