Clamps and glue are the unsung heroes of woodworking. Clamps hold parts together while glue cures, and glue creates a bond stronger than the wood itself. Understanding Clamps

Clamps serve two purposes in woodworking: they hold workpieces securely for cutting, shaping, and finishing, and they apply pressure during glue-up to close joints and hold parts in alignment while the adhesive cures.

The fundamental rule of clamping is to apply even pressure perpendicular to the joint surface. Uneven clamping creates gaps. Too much pressure squeezes out the glue, creating a starved joint. Too little pressure leaves the joint loose.

Types of Clamps

Bar Clamps

Bar clamps consist of a steel or aluminum bar with a fixed head on one end and a sliding head with a screw mechanism on the other. They are the most versatile clamps for general woodworking. Bar clamps come in lengths from 6 inches to 8 feet. Parallel-jaw bar clamps have jaws that remain parallel as they close, distributing pressure evenly — these are the best choice for glue-ups.

For most woodworkers, a set of six 48-inch bar clamps and six 24-inch bar clamps covers the majority of projects. Quick-release bar clamps allow one-handed operation and are convenient for repetitive clamping.

Pipe Clamps

Spring Clamps

Spring clamps provide light pressure for holding small parts, temporary positioning, and light assembly. They are inexpensive and quick to use. Spring clamps are not suitable for heavy glue-up work but are invaluable as extra hands.

Hand Screw Clamps

Hand screw clamps have two parallel wooden jaws adjusted by two threaded screws. They provide even pressure over a wide area and can be adjusted to clamp non-parallel surfaces. Hand screw clamps are excellent for delicate work, mitered frames, and holding workpieces for carving and shaping.

Corner Clamps

Corner clamps hold pieces at 90-degree angles during assembly. They are essential for picture frames, boxes, and casework where square corners are critical. Some corner clamps also handle 45-degree angles for mitered frames.

Quick-Grip Clamps

One-handed quick-grip clamps use a trigger mechanism to slide the jaw closed and a lever to lock. They are convenient for light-duty clamping, holding workpieces for cutting and drilling, and light assembly. They are not suitable for heavy glue-ups because they can break if over-tightened.

Band Clamps

Band clamps use a fabric or nylon strap that wraps around a workpiece, with a ratchet mechanism to tighten. They are ideal for irregular shapes, frames, and compress assemblies that cannot be clamped with bar clamps. A band clamp with four corner brackets is excellent for chair and case assembly.

Clamping Techniques

Panel Glue-Ups

Gluing narrow boards into wide panels requires careful clamping. Arrange the boards with alternating grain direction to minimize cupping. Apply glue to both edges, spread evenly, and clamp with bar clamps every 6–8 inches across the panel. Use cauls (strips of wood) across the panel at each clamp to distribute pressure and keep the panel flat.

Alternate clamps above and below the panel to prevent bowing. Tighten clamps progressively — snug all clamps first, then tighten each one a quarter turn at a time, working from the center outward.

Case Assembly

Assembling a cabinet case requires clamping multiple joints simultaneously. Dry-fit all parts first to ensure everything fits. Apply glue to all joints, assemble the case, and apply clamps. Check for square by measuring diagonals — equal diagonals means the case is square. Adjust clamps as needed to correct twists.

Use enough clamps to close all joints, but do not overtighten. A common mistake is using too few clamps and tightening them excessively to close gaps, which bows the workpiece and starves the glue joint.

Edge Clamping

When clamping edges (for applying trim or edging), use more clamps with lighter pressure rather than fewer clamps with heavy pressure. Even spacing prevents the trim from bowing between clamps.

Types of Wood Glue

PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) Glue

Yellow carpenter’s glue (aliphatic resin) is the most common woodworking adhesive. It is strong, gap-filling, and cleans up with water. Yellow glue has an open time of 5–10 minutes and requires clamping for 30–60 minutes. It is suitable for almost all interior woodworking applications.

White glue (standard PVA) has longer open time but less strength and creep resistance than yellow glue. It is suitable for non-structural applications and crafts.

Type I and Type II PVA glues are water-resistant. Type II (water-resistant) is suitable for exterior projects that will not be submerged. Type I (waterproof) is for outdoor use and marine applications.

Hide Glue

Hide glue is the traditional woodworking adhesive, made from animal hides. It is available in liquid (ready-to-use) and granular (mix with water and heat) forms. Hide glue has several unique properties: it creates a strong bond, it is reversible with heat and moisture (allowing joint repair), and it has a long open time.

Hide glue is preferred for antique restoration, musical instrument construction, and fine furniture where future disassembly may be necessary. Liquid hide glue is convenient but has shorter shelf life than PVA.

Epoxy

Epoxy is a two-part adhesive that creates extremely strong, waterproof bonds. It fills gaps well and bonds to almost any material, including oily woods, metal, and plastics. Epoxy is used for exterior projects, boat building, composite laminations, and repairs.

Epoxy has a working time of 5–60 minutes depending on the formulation. It requires thorough mixing (the two parts must be combined precisely) and cures by chemical reaction. Epoxy produces strong fumes and requires good ventilation.

Polyurethane Glue

Polyurethane glue (Gorilla Glue is the best-known brand) expands as it cures, filling gaps and creating a strong, waterproof bond. It bonds wood, metal, plastic, and stone. Polyurethane glue requires moisture to cure — dampen one surface before applying glue.

The expansion can be a problem — it foams out of joints and creates a mess that is difficult to clean. Polyurethane glue is best for exterior projects, laminations, and applications where gap-filling capability is essential.

Cyanoacrylate (CA) Glue

CA glue (super glue) bonds instantly on contact. It is used for small repairs, temporary positioning, and in wood turning for stabilizing cracks and filling voids. Thin CA glue penetrates cracks; thick CA glue fills gaps. CA glue requires careful application and can bond skin instantly.

Glue Application Techniques

Proper glue application is as important as choosing the right adhesive. Apply glue to both surfaces of the joint, not just one. Spreading glue on both sides ensures complete coverage and eliminates dry spots. Use a small brush, a glue roller, or a scrap of wood to spread the glue evenly. Too little glue leaves weak joints; too much glue creates a mess and can cause the joint to float out of alignment.

For edge-gluing panels, apply glue to both edges and spread it evenly. The glue should form a continuous film across the entire joint surface. When you clamp the boards together, a uniform bead of squeeze-out along the entire joint indicates proper glue coverage. If squeeze-out appears only in spots, you have not applied enough glue or the boards are not clamped evenly.

Clamping pressure should be sufficient to bring the joint closed completely but not so high that it squeezes all the glue out of the joint. A starved joint — one with insufficient glue because too much was squeezed out — is weaker than a joint with slightly excess glue. If you see glue squeezing out, you have enough. If you see no squeeze-out, you may not have enough glue or enough clamping pressure.
