Centering the subject creates symmetry and formality. Breaking the rule of thirds can create tension or call attention to a specific element.

Leading lines direct the audience’s eye through the frame. Roads, fences, building edges, and shadows can all function as leading lines that point toward the subject or create depth. Lines that converge toward a vanishing point add three-dimensional depth to a two-dimensional image.
